ENDE DER WELT
Karlsruhe 2012 / Site Specific Audio-Installation
The installation took place on an enchanted site next to the highway on the outskirts of the city of Karlsruhe.
Staged traces made from found and rearranged materials create an image of a bygone civilization and an eerie idyll.
Soundscapes from hidden speakers alienate the acoustic environment and activate the zones of visual intervention in the overgrown terrain.
The films show the locations and document the acoustic reality on site in a mixture of ambient sounds and the embedded compositions.
Concept / Scenography - Lukas Sander
Sound - Christian Berkes
A black taxi takes the audience to the outskirts of the city. During the ride, a noise gradually overlays the music coming from the car radio. It is the anticipated sound of the destination of the journey under a motorway bridge. Here, the driver points the way and says goodbye with the brief statement that he will wait on the other side. The path leads through a rusty gate and knee-high grass to a broken car, from whose destroyed dashboard the same song as in the taxi can be heard as if coming from a distance.
A desire path leads deeper into the terrain and to a locked hatch on a brick enclosure in the ground. From below come the sounds of dripping water, metallic clanging and distant footsteps, which, due to their long reverberation, suggest a spacious underground room.
Beneath a high-voltage pylon is a sandy area surrounded by heavy wooden planks. From the bushes comes the sound of metallic cricket chirping, modified bird calls and electrical wires. In one corner is a pit covered with boards, containing the shells of an oversized egg.
The path continues and the terrain opens up. Next to the embankment of the highway lies a wrecked car, from whose interior the voice of a defective navigation device can be heard.
Concrete slabs, street lamps, and a stack of pallets can be found beneath the dense vegetation. The buzzing of blowflies adds to the threatening acoustic atmosphere. From a pool of half-coagulated blood that attracts numerous insects a trail leads through the undergrowth.
A spot by a fire place. The surrounding bushes rustle and crackle as if from sparks and snapping twigs. Next to the ashes lies a large bone and a dirty tuxedo jacket.
A turning leads into a copse to a pile of old mattresses. From here tactile sounds of fabric being stroked and quiet breathing noises can be heard. On the floor between the cushions lies the skull of a dog-like predator. Finally the path leads out into the open to the street with the waiting taxi.
